A Coin Featuring Trump's Image: A Controversial Step in Washington
SadaNews - Officials have announced that the U.S. Treasury Department is considering issuing a one-dollar coin featuring the image of President Donald Trump, in celebration of the 250th anniversary of the country's independence.
Treasury Secretary Scott Benczkowski reshared a post from Treasurer Brandon Beach that includes preliminary designs for the coin.
Beach posted the draft designs on X platform with a comment expressing that he "looks forward to sharing more soon, once the U.S. government shutdown ends."
One of the designs shows Trump's image on one side of the coin, while the other side features a different image of him raising his fist in front of an American flag with the phrase "Fight Fight Fight."
This image was captured after an assassination attempt against him last year during his election campaign.
When asked about the coin, a spokesperson for the Treasury Department criticized what he termed the "coercive shutdown imposed by the far-left on our government."
He then added: "This initial draft clearly reflects the enduring spirit of our country and our democracy, even in the face of tremendous obstacles."
In 2020, Congress approved legislation signed by Trump during his first term allowing the Treasury Department to issue one-dollar coins "with symbolic designs to commemorate the 55th anniversary of the United States."
The Treasury Department can mint and issue coins over a one-year period starting in January 2026.
The U.S. Congress imposes restrictions on the Treasury Department's use of images of living persons in coin designs, and it is unclear whether Trump's coin designs will face obstacles under current laws.
