Smotrich Attacks Trump's Peace Plan: A Resounding Failure and 'Political Madness'

SadaNews - The far-right Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich criticized on Tuesday the peace plan for Gaza announced by U.S. President Donald Trump and supported by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

In a post on X, Smotrich described the plan as a "resounding diplomatic failure and a neglect of all the lessons from the October 7 attack" launched by Hamas against Israel, which ignited the war in Gaza.

He added: "In my estimation, this will also end in tears. Our children will be forced to fight in Gaza again."

In his lengthy tweet, Smotrich said: "After October 7, and after two years of dedication, heroism, and sacrifices made by our people, with painful losses and significant achievements by the grace of God on all fronts, we cannot revert to old policies that place our security in the hands of external parties, or rely on illusions that others will do the work for us."

He added: "Furthermore, we cannot replace real achievements on the ground with political illusions or settle for shiny diplomatic celebrations and slogans like 'two-state solution' or 'Palestinians ruling Palestinians', or talk about a Palestinian police force trained by Egypt and Jordan, with Qatar as a central player."

He continued: "All of this is just a return to the old Oslo concepts, which is a historical waste of the opportunity to liberate from them, a significant political failure, and a disregard for the lessons of October 7. In my opinion, this path will end in crying, and our children will be forced to fight in Gaza again. This is what Einstein described as madness: to repeat the same actions and expect different results."

On its part, countries and international organizations welcomed the peace proposal presented by U.S. President Donald Trump to end the Gaza war.

The United Nations confirmed its readiness to support Trump's peace plan, as a spokesman for the organization told reporters in New York in response to a question about the Trump plan: "We welcome all mediation efforts, and the United Nations is ready to provide support, including, as you expect, by providing humanitarian aid."
