Argentina: The Global Progressive Alliance Unanimously Adopts a Resolution on Halting Genocide and Establishing an Independent Palestinian State

SadaNews - Members of the Global Progressive Alliance Council, representing various geopolitical regions of the world, unanimously voted on a resolution to halt the genocide in the Gaza Strip, end the occupation, provide relief and reconstruction assistance for Gaza, and establish an independent Palestinian state through peaceful means on the borders of June 4, 1967, with its capital in Jerusalem.

In his intervention to present the statement via "video conference" from the city of Ramallah, Mohammed Shtayyeh, a member of the Global Progressive Alliance leadership council from the Arab world, reviewed the reality of destruction, killing, and famine in the genocide war in Gaza, and what the West Bank, including Jerusalem, is enduring from siege, Judaization, colonization, and incursions, affirming the principles and framework for peace adopted by the Global Progressive Alliance regarding Palestine and the Middle East, (in Santiago/Chile on October 6, 2024).

In the opening of its statement, the council reaffirmed on behalf of all the parties and political organizations in the Global Progressive Alliance its demand for an immediate ceasefire, protection for civilians, the provision of unhindered and safe humanitarian assistance, reconstruction of Gaza, rejection of any forced displacement, and commitment to a political process under international law towards a two-state solution on the borders of June 4, 1967, with Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Palestine, and the West Bank and Gaza as a single territorial unit.

He added, we are committed to political solutions for these escalating conflicts, and we extend our hand in respect and cooperation to achieve a peaceful and just path forward, expressing their deep concern.

He called for immediate and unhindered actions in response to the United Nations declaration of Gaza as a famine area, announcing their support for the stance of various countries against displacement, and for a coordinated and comprehensive reconstruction plan for Gaza.

The council members outlined these priorities for coordinating political, legal, and economic measures:

● Issuing an order for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, ending mass killings and starvation in Gaza, with complete adherence to the International Court of Justice ruling regarding interim measures (January 26, 2024) in the case brought before the International Court of Justice regarding the application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in Gaza (South Africa vs. Israel), submitted on December 29, 2023. We also call for the unconditional release of hostages and full compliance with international humanitarian law.

● Stopping arms shipments and halting the transfer and sale of weapons for operations that violate international law.

● Exercising effective international pressure, including through trade and economic measures, on Israel until international law is respected.

Regarding the Global Progressive Alliance's vision to pave the way for just peace, it called for the necessity of:

● Implementing the rulings of the International Court of Justice regarding the end to Israeli occupation and cooperating with the International Criminal Court, including enforcing arrest warrants.

● Supporting United Nations resolutions and taking appropriate measures within them in response to Israel's continued non-compliance with its decisions, including taking steps to ensure the implementation of United Nations General Assembly Resolution 194 regarding the right of return.

● Condemning efforts to obstruct Palestinian representation in the United Nations - including preventing U.S. administration from allowing President Mahmoud Abbas and his delegation to enter the United Nations, in violation of the UN Headquarters Agreement.

In its support and demand for countries around the world to recognize Palestine, the Global Progressive Alliance Council expressed its support and assistance in:

● Moving forward in taking steps towards recognizing the State of Palestine on the 1967 borders, with its capital in Jerusalem, supporting Palestine's membership in the United Nations, acknowledging the status of occupation, and ensuring the right of return for refugees.

● Welcoming the New York Declaration on the peaceful settlement of the Palestinian issue and the application of the two-state solution, and welcoming announcements from states that enhance recognition of the State of Palestine.
