Turkey: Arrest of Opposition Mayor and 47 Other Officials

SadaNews - Turkish authorities arrested the mayor of a district in Istanbul and 47 officials on Saturday in connection with allegations of corruption, as part of a strong campaign against the country's main opposition party.

Anadolu news agency reported that the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office issued the arrest warrants as part of an investigation into extortion, bribery, embezzlement, and manipulation of tender processes in the municipality of Bayrampaşa, which is part of the city.

For his part, Bayrampaşa Mayor Hasan Mutlu denied these allegations in a statement he published via the social media platform X, where he tweeted "What is happening is nothing more than political operations and baseless slander."

He added, addressing the residents of the area, "Dear residents of Bayrampaşa, rest assured that together we will overcome these slanders and acts of deception," as he put it.

"Bayrampaşa" is one of Istanbul's districts, located on the European side of the city.

It is worth noting that over the past few months, Turkish authorities have arrested more than ten mayors belonging to the Republican People's Party, the main opposition party in Turkey, alongside hundreds of municipal officials on corruption charges, including Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, whose arrest sparked widespread protests.

According to the AP, the Republican People's Party stated that the arrests and accusations come as part of a government campaign aimed at weakening the opposition and paving the way for Erdoğan to stay in power for another five years.

The government denies these allegations and affirms that Turkish courts are independent.

Additionally, in a major case set to be heard next Monday, the court is expected to issue a decision on whether to annul the decisions of the general conference of the Republican People's Party held in 2023, a decision that could lead to a change in the party's leadership and create chaos within it.

The Republican People's Party had made significant gains in the local elections held in Turkey last year.
