What is the reason for the danger of influenza in the elderly?

SadaNews - A team of scientists revealed the reason why the elderly are more susceptible to severe influenza infections, paving the way for the development of new treatments that reduce complications and mortality in this age group.

The study showed that aging leads to increased production of a sugar protein called "Apolipoprotein D" (ApoD), which is associated with fat metabolism and inflammation regulation. Elevated levels of ApoD in the lungs of the elderly weaken the immune response against viruses and cause widespread damage to lung tissues, increasing the severity of infections.

The scientists explained that ApoD inhibits the activation of type I interferons, which are essential molecules for resisting viruses, and causes extensive damage to the mitochondria responsible for energy production and stimulating the immune response, allowing the virus to replicate and exacerbate symptoms.

These findings are the result of collaboration between universities and research centers in China and the UK, including the Chinese Agricultural University, the University of Nottingham, the Institute of Microbiology at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the National Institute for Viral Disease Control and Prevention in China, as well as the University of Edinburgh.

Professor Kin-Chao Chang from the University of Nottingham, who participated in the study, stated:
"Aging is a key factor increasing the risk of influenza-related mortality. As the world's population ages, the pressures on healthcare systems and economies increase, and it is essential to understand the mechanisms of this infection to develop effective solutions."

Scientists believe that targeting the ApoD protein with inhibitory treatments could provide a promising means to alleviate the severity of influenza in the elderly and help reduce morbidity and mortality rates.

The study was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).
