7 Deaths Due to Starvation in Gaza in the Past Few Hours
SadaNews - The Ministry of Health in Gaza announced today, Sunday, the death of 7 citizens due to starvation and malnutrition, recorded by hospitals in the Gaza Strip over the past 24 hours.
It reported that the total number of victims of starvation and malnutrition has risen to 339 martyrs, including 124 children.
It explained that since the announcement of the famine classification in the Gaza Strip by the IPC on August 22, 61 deaths have been recorded, including 9 children due to starvation.
An international classification for food insecurity, in which the United Nations participates, confirms the occurrence of famine in the Gaza Governorate and predicts its spread to the Deir al-Balah and Khan Younis Governorates by the end of September.
The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification stated that more than half a million people in the Gaza Strip are facing catastrophic conditions, which is the fifth phase of the classification, characterized by severe hunger, death, deprivation, and extremely critical levels of acute malnutrition.
The classification noted that another 1.07 million people (54% of the population) face phase four, which is "emergency" acute food insecurity. Meanwhile, 396,000 (20% of the population) are in phase three, which is "crisis" acute food insecurity.
The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification is a global initiative involving UN agencies, regional partners, and relief organizations, which classifies food insecurity into five phases, with famine being the most severe, classified as phase five.
