Iran Rejects Activation of the 'Snapback Mechanism' and Demands Entry of Russian Inspectors to Bushehr Nuclear Plant
SadaNews - Tehran announced the absence of what is called the "snapback mechanism" (automatic re-imposition of sanctions) in the Russian-Chinese proposal, stipulating that only inspectors of Russian nationality be allowed into the "Bushehr" nuclear plant.
Iraan's National Security and Foreign Policy Committee member, Aladdin Boroujerdi, confirmed that there is nothing called "snapback" (automatic re-imposition of sanctions) in the Russian-Chinese proposal.
Boroujerdi revealed that his country agreed to the presence of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors in the "Bushehr" nuclear plant, provided they are solely of Russian nationality.
Regarding the re-imposition of sanctions on Iran, Boroujerdi added: If it is decided that oil will not be exported from Iran, then certainly measures will be taken to prevent others from exporting their oil as well.
He further stated: "We will not stand idly by in defending our national interests."
Earlier, three European officials told CNN that the "European Troika" countries are likely to initiate the process of re-imposing United Nations sanctions on Iran's "snapback" due to its nuclear program on Thursday.
The "snapback" process, as defined in the 2015 Iranian nuclear deal, takes about 30 days to complete.
Earlier, the Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia to the United Nations Dmitry Polyansky announced that Moscow proposed the extension of the UN Security Council Resolution related to the Iranian nuclear deal.
He told reporters: "This is not about easing sanctions for six months, but about extending the validity of Resolution 2231. In fact, Russia and China, as responsible parties in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), want to provide more room for diplomacy and create opportunities for diplomatic exploration of a solution to this issue."
