Ireland's President: The Genocide of Gaza is a Historical Tragedy

SadaNews - Irish President Michael D. Higgins described the genocide perpetrated by Israel against the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip as "a tragic period in world history and a direct threat to democracy," amid a wave of Western and global condemnations of Israel, especially after the United Nations officially declared a state of famine in the city of Gaza.

In an interview with Irish radio, Higgins emphasized that Israel seeks to sever the ties between the West Bank and Gaza, warning that "a world of impunity is the most dangerous threat to democracy."

Higgins stressed the need for global affirmation of the role of the United Nations General Assembly in light of the genocide that he acknowledged Israel is committing in Gaza.

He also called for the activation of Chapter Seven of the United Nations Charter to form a force to ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza, even in the event of a veto by the Security Council.

Meanwhile, Australia witnessed massive protests where tens of thousands rallied in support of the Palestinians and against the genocide and starvation in Gaza.

Organizers stated that more than 40 marches were held across various cities, with approximately 350,000 participants, including nearly 50,000 in Brisbane, as demonstrators chanted "Free Palestine" and waved Palestinian flags.

These popular movements come amid escalating tensions between Israel and Australia, after the government of Anthony Albanese announced its intention to recognize a Palestinian state, which angered Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court.

In a related context, Canadian Minister of International Development Randeep Sarai expressed concern over the spread of famine and the increase in civilian deaths, especially among children, holding Israel responsible for what he described as the "devastating reality" in Gaza.

In the Netherlands, the caretaker government witnessed several resignations in protest against the failure to impose sanctions on Israel despite the ongoing war of genocide and starvation.
