NATO: We Must Acknowledge Russia's Control Over Some Ukrainian Territories
SadaNews - NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte stated that future peace talks regarding Ukraine will likely need to address the fate of territories currently under Russian control.
Rutte told ABC News: "We must recognize at this moment that Russia controls some Ukrainian territories." He added that after a ceasefire, discussions will focus on regional issues and potential security guarantees for Ukraine.
Rutte emphasized the need to distinguish between "realistic" and "legal" recognition in regional matters. Any potential agreement on Russia's actual control over certain areas can be recognized without legal acknowledgment, according to him.
U.S. President Donald Trump is set to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska next Friday to discuss a potential diplomatic solution to the conflict in Ukraine.
Rutte praised Trump's efforts, stating: "Next Friday will be important as it will test how serious Putin is about ending this terrible war."
