Syrian President: Israeli Intervention Has Pushed the Country into a Dangerous Phase
SadaNews - Syrian President, Ahmad al-Shara, described the recent events in the Sweida Governorate as "a dangerous turning point," noting that "the violent clashes between these groups nearly spiraled out of control were it not for the intervention of the Syrian state to calm the situation."
This came in a televised speech on Saturday, following the announcement of the Syrian presidency of a "comprehensive and immediate" ceasefire across all regions of the country, including Sweida.
SANA quoted al-Shara as saying, "The Syrian state managed to calm the situation despite the difficulties, but the Israeli intervention has pushed the country into a dangerous phase threatening its stability due to the blatant shelling in the south and government institutions in Damascus. Following these events, American and Arab mediations intervened in an attempt to reach a calming of the situation."
He added that "with the state's withdrawal from some areas, armed groups from Sweida began launching retaliatory attacks against the Bedouins and their families. These retaliatory attacks, which accompanied violations of human rights, prompted other tribes to gather to lift the siege on the Bedouins inside Sweida."
He pointed out that "the state stood by Sweida after the liberation of Syria and was keen to support it, but some have harmed the city and its role in national stability," emphasizing that "relying on foreign powers and using some internal parties from Sweida as tools in international conflicts does not serve the interests of Syrians but exacerbates the crisis."
Al-Shara stated that "the Syrian state is committed to protecting all minorities and sects in the country and is moving forward in holding all violators accountable."
He said: "We disavow all the crimes and violations that occurred, whether from within Sweida or outside it, and we reaffirm the importance of achieving justice and enforcing the law."
He emphasized that "in this sensitive circumstance, there is an urgent need to prioritize reason and wisdom and to open the way for the rational and wise, " pointing out that "facts confirm that Syria is not a field for experiments of division, separation, or sectarian incitement."
Al-Shara assured that "the strength of the Syrian state derives from the cohesion of its people, the robustness of its regional and international relations, and the interconnection of its interests with the homeland."
The Syrian President described the tribes in Sweida as always having been "a bulwark against internal and external threats," and that the Druze community is a "fundamental fabric of the Syrian composition and their exclusion represents a direct threat to the stability of Syria."
