Speculations of Ben Gvir's Resignation If an Agreement is Reached in Gaza

SadaNews - The official Israeli broadcasting authority speculated that Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir may resign from the coalition government if an agreement is signed regarding Gaza with Hamas.

The authority clarified that there is a crisis in the ruling coalition in Israel, in light of the ongoing negotiations with Hamas in Qatar.

It reported that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu - who is wanted by the International Criminal Court for committing crimes against humanity in Gaza - will hold a special meeting (the date of which has not been specified) with Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, to prevent the ruling coalition in Tel Aviv from unraveling.

The authority anticipated that Ben Gvir would tender his resignation from the coalition if an agreement with Hamas is signed.

Conversely, Channel 14 in Israel reported that close associates of Netanyahu indicated that Smotrich might not leave the government if the agreement proceeds.

The Qatari capital, Doha, is currently witnessing a new round of indirect negotiations between delegations from Hamas and Israel, mediated by Qatari and Egyptian officials, with American participation, aimed at reaching a new agreement for a ceasefire and prisoner exchange.

Over the past 20 months, several rounds of indirect negotiations have been held between Israel and Hamas regarding a ceasefire and prisoner exchange, led by Egypt, Qatar, and the United States.

During this period, two ceasefire agreements were reached, the first in November 2023, and the second in January 2025, which included partial agreements for the exchange of a number of prisoners.

Netanyahu has evaded completing the latest agreement, as the bombing of Gaza resumed on March 18.

The Israeli opposition emphasizes that Netanyahu is only interested in partial deals that ensure the continuation of the war to serve his personal political interests, particularly his stay in power, in response to the more extreme right wing of his government.
