Trump Threatens Journalist with Revocation of Her American Citizenship for Criticizing His Administration

SadaNews - On Saturday, U.S. President Donald Trump threatened talk show host Rosie O'Donnell with the revocation of her American citizenship after she criticized his administration's handling of weather forecasting agencies in the wake of deadly floods in Texas, in the latest round of a years-long feud between the two on social media.

Trump wrote on his platform, "Truth Social": "Given that Rosie O'Donnell does not serve the interests of our great country, I am seriously considering revoking her citizenship," citing the justification for deportation that the administration has used in its attempts to remove foreign-born protestors from the country.

He added, "She poses a threat to humanity, and should remain in the wonderful country of Ireland, if they want that. God bless America."

Does Trump have the right to do that?

Under U.S. law, the president does not have the authority to revoke the citizenship of any American born in the United States, and O'Donnell was born in New York.

O'Donnell, who has long been subjected to Trump's insults and mockery, moved to Ireland earlier this year with her 12-year-old son after the president's second term began.

She stated in a video posted on TikTok in March that she would return to the United States "when it is safe for all citizens in America to enjoy equal rights."

O'Donnell responded to Trump's threat in two posts on her Instagram account, saying that the president opposes her because she "stands in direct opposition to everything he represents."

Trump's disdain for O'Donnell dates back to 2006 when O'Donnell, a comedian and host of The View at the time, mocked Trump over his handling of the controversy surrounding the winner of the Miss USA pageant, which Trump owned.

It appears that Trump's recent attack on O'Donnell was a response to a TikTok video she posted this month mourning 119 victims of the July 4 floods in Texas, blaming Trump's widespread cuts to the environmental and scientific agencies involved in predicting major natural disasters.

O'Donnell said in the video: "What a horror story in Texas! And you know, when the president cancels all early warning systems and the government’s capabilities to predict the weather, these are the results we will start to see daily."

The Trump administration, along with local and state officials, faced increasing scrutiny over whether more could have been done to protect and warn residents before the floods in Texas, which struck with astonishing speed in the hours leading up to the dawn of American Independence Day on July 4 and resulted in at least 120 deaths, including dozens of children.

On Friday, Trump visited Texas and defended the government's response to the disaster, stating that his agencies "did an incredible job under the circumstances."
