Kyiv: The Debate on NATO Membership Has Become Fruitless

SadaNews - The spokesperson for the Kyiv foreign system, Yevhenyi Tikhy, stated that the ongoing debate between Ukraine and the West regarding its membership in NATO is "fruitless and stagnant."

Tikhy mentioned in a press interview that the repeated dialogue concerning Kyiv's accession to the alliance has become a "vicious cycle," explaining that "all arguments have been presented, as well as counterarguments, yet every new round of discussion follows the same path without any significant outcome."

In September 2022, Ukraine submitted an official request for urgent NATO membership; however, several countries within the alliance, particularly the United States, Germany, Hungary, and Slovakia, continue to oppose the move, according to previous statements by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

In March, U.S. President Donald Trump stated during his meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg at the White House that "the answer regarding Ukraine's membership has been known for 40 years," referring to an unwelcoming stance toward Kyiv's accession.

The NATO summit held in The Hague on June 24 and 25 ignored the issue of Ukraine's membership, with the final statement limited to affirming continued military supplies without addressing its future accession or mentioning a "irreversible path toward the alliance," contrary to what was stated in the Washington Summit statement in 2024.
