Signing Agreements to Launch the "Tajdeed" Project for Wastewater Treatment in Northwest Jenin
SadaNews Economy - In a strategic move that enhances environmental sustainability and supports local economic development, agreements were signed today at the Ministry of Finance and Planning headquarters in Ramallah for the financing of the "Tajdeed" project for wastewater treatment and its reuse for agricultural purposes in the villages of northwest Jenin, as part of a broad international partnership.
The agreement was signed by the Minister of Water Authority Dr. Ziad Al-Maimi, and the Minister of Finance and Planning Dr. Estephan Salameh, alongside representatives from the European Union, the French Consul General, the French Development Agency, the German government, the Director of the German Development Bank, and the Chairman of the Board of the West Jenin Water Facility, Aouni Al-Amour, in a high-profile official event reflecting the significance of the project as one of the vital projects in the water sector.
The agreements include a contribution from the European Union worth 5.5 million euros, implemented through the French Development Agency under the European funding program for Palestine for the year 2025, in addition to a parallel financing agreement with the German government worth 11.2 million euros, bringing the total funding under the two agreements to 16.7 million euros, while the total funding for the "Tajdeed" project amounts to approximately 35 million euros.
The "Tajdeed" project is considered a comprehensive model for infrastructure projects, aiming to treat wastewater and reuse it in agriculture, thereby enhancing the efficiency of water resource management and reducing environmental pollution. It targets around 10 villages in northwest Jenin, which suffer from the influx of wastewater, potentially leading to a noticeable improvement in both the environmental and health situations and supporting the stability of the population clusters.
During the signing ceremony, it was noted that the European Union and the French Development Agency are working to finalize the procedures for the contribution agreement, in preparation for its formal signing during the current month of May.
This project comes as part of the "Team Europe" initiative for wastewater management in Palestine, jointly funded by the European Union, the French Development Agency, and the German Development Bank, within the framework of an international partnership aimed at developing water infrastructure and enhancing the elements of sustainable development in Palestine.
