Will Iran refrain from attacking Israel in exchange for concessions from Trump?
SadaNews - Iran may refrain from attacking Israel in exchange for concessions it would receive from U.S. President Donald Trump, according to Israeli reports on Sunday evening.
Following Trump's sharp statements against Netanyahu, the political leadership in Israel was informed of the possibility of an Iranian attack in the coming hours, possibly before midnight, according to Channel 12.
At the same time, the political-security cabinet (the "kabinett") is meeting in a secret location in the occupied city of Jerusalem, different from the previously scheduled site, for security reasons, and the potential for escalation.
Channel 12 reported that "Trump exchanged messages with Israel over the past hours and has been working hard to confirm his intention to prevent Iran from carrying out its threat."
Channel 13 noted that "Washington is making intensive efforts to prevent an Iranian response, and in Israel, there are estimates that these efforts will bear fruit."
Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper, through its website ("Ynet"), reported that "it seems that Tehran will show a gesture of goodwill towards U.S. President Donald Trump by refraining from attacking Israel in exchange for obtaining concessions from the Americans."
It cited sources indicating that Trump, as a result of the Israeli operation in the southern suburbs of Beirut and the crisis reached in negotiations, is seriously considering granting Iran significant rewards in arranging operations within the framework of the expected agreement between Tehran and Washington, and "the U.S. President may be ready to lift the maritime blockade imposed on Iran and the Strait of Hormuz immediately, rather than gradually from both sides as previously agreed, if Iran abandons its plans for an attack."
Channel 12 indicated that "it is expected in Israel that Trump will soon announce 'something' for the Iranians in exchange for their non-response to the attack on the suburbs."
The channel reported on Sunday night that "it has not yet been known what this 'something' is, but these are the efforts being made behind the scenes."
The U.S. administration also informed during its talks with Tel Aviv that "Israel should not take any steps that could jeopardize the agreement" and that even if Iran ultimately fired, Israel should refrain from responding.
Channel 12 quoted a close associate of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as saying that Trump's statement and the remarks he made to the media were "met with astonishment."
A high-ranking Israeli official, who was not named in the report, stated that "Trump's announcement is a loud slap; the intensity of the blockade has risen, and the expectation of not carrying out attacks on Lebanese territory does not correspond with a strategic ally."
Netanyahu refuses to withdraw from southern Lebanon.
In this context, Channel 12's report noted that Trump suggested in one of his past conversations with Netanyahu, "a practical withdrawal of Israel from southern Lebanon as part of broader understandings with Iran."
However, Netanyahu "categorically rejected the matter and told Trump that it does not serve the shared interests of Israel and the United States."
The report highlighted that "the biggest concern tonight, politically and security-wise, is that Israel's margin of maneuver in Lebanon will be significantly reduced; and perhaps, as part of the agreement Trump intends to sign with the Iranians, this will also include a complete cessation of military activity throughout Lebanon, not just in Beirut."
