Anticipation for a "Soon" American-Iranian Agreement; Tehran Vows to Respond to the Attack on the Suburb
SadaNews - Attention is turning to the possibility of announcing a framework agreement between the United States and Iran to end the military confrontation, amid varying indications regarding the signing date. U.S. President Donald Trump expressed optimism about finalizing the agreement on Sunday, while Tehran confirmed that negotiations are still ongoing and the signing date has not yet been determined.
This comes at a time when the Israeli raid on the southern suburb of Beirut has provoked angry reactions from Iran, with the Deputy Commander of the "Qatem al-Anbiya" headquarters promising that "the Zionist crimes in the southern suburbs of Beirut will not go unanswered." These statements hold particular significance given the recent escalation in the Lebanese arena, which is linked to the Iranian-Israeli confrontation that ended days ago with a direct Iranian attack on Israel, followed by a limited Israeli response halted by Washington. During that time, President Donald Trump announced that he had asked Israel to cease additional operations against Iran to maintain the ongoing understandings.
Meanwhile, Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif announced that the United States and Iran have reached a framework for a peace agreement, explaining that Islamabad is preparing to sign the agreement electronically today, followed by technical talks between the two parties in the coming days to finalize its details.
On the other hand, Iran showed reservations regarding these statements. The spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Ismail Baqai, stated in comments reported by the official Iranian news agency that the deadline for signing the memorandum of understanding with the United States is still undecided, emphasizing that the current discussions, taking place under the mediation of Islamabad, are focused on ending the war, with the decision made at this stage to not address the nuclear issue.
Baqai added that the American side is avoiding making statements about the course of the negotiations, which requires, in his words, dealing with caution and not preempting the results of the discussions, noting that Tehran is monitoring developments amid the absence of clear American positions regarding the negotiation process.
For its part, the Iranian "Fars" agency considered that Trump's insistence on announcing the signing of an understanding with Iran on Sunday represents a "test" for the Iranian negotiating team, indicating that the Iranian officials involved in the discussions have explicitly confirmed that the understanding has not been achieved yet, and that signing it on the same day "will certainly not happen," reflecting the ongoing ambiguity surrounding the fate and timing of the agreement.
