Knesset Approves in First Reading Bill to Dissolve Itself
SadaNews - The Knesset's plenum approved in a first reading on Monday night - Tuesday the bill to dissolve the 25th Knesset, with the support of 106 members of Knesset.
This move brings Israel closer to early elections if the law continues its legislative path in the second and third readings.
The approval came hours after the Knesset Committee approved the proposal to present the bill to the plenum, while the necessary legislative procedures still need to be completed before the law comes into effect and officially dissolves the Knesset.
According to the bill, the potential date for the elections ranges from September 8 to October 20, while the governing coalition announced that it would formulate its final position on the election date before presenting the law for the second and third readings.
The acting head of the Central Elections Committee, Dean Lifneh, informed the Knesset that the committee is capable of holding elections even if they occur within less than 90 days from the date of the Knesset's dissolution, noting that the preferred date from a professional perspective is no less than 83 days.
He added that some of the proposed dates coincide with Jewish holidays, considering that the date of September 15 is the most complicated logistically, due to the reduced time available for counting double envelopes and monitoring the integrity of the electoral process.
