Iran: Execution of Two Individuals Convicted of 'Terrorist Acts' During Protests

SadaNews - Iranian authorities executed two individuals convicted of committing "terrorist acts" during the popular protests that took place in the country late last year.

The "Mizan" news agency, affiliated with the Iranian judiciary, reported that the death sentence issued against Mehrdad Mohammadi and Ashkan Maleki was carried out early this Monday morning.

The agency added that Mohammadi and Maleki were convicted of leading violent acts in Tehran province during the recent protests, causing damage to public property, in addition to setting fire to a mosque.

It was noted that the Iranian supreme court upheld the death sentence against the two men before its execution.

The agency did not provide additional details regarding the date of the sentences against the two individuals.

It is worth mentioning that protests erupted in Iran in late December 2025 and lasted for about two weeks, sparked by a sharp decline in the value of the local currency and the worsening economic crisis.

Israel and the United States waged a war against Iran on February 28, with the latter responding with attacks on Gulf countries and Israel.

Since then, the pace of arrests and executions related to the war as well as the protests that occurred earlier this year has increased.

Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, state that Iran is the second most active country in carrying out death sentences after China.

Authorities executed at least 1,639 individuals in 2025, a record number since 1989, according to recent reports from “Human Rights in Iran,” based in Norway, and “Together Against the Death Penalty.”
