Axios: No Expected Signing of American-Iranian Agreement Today, Negotiations Continue

SadaNews - The Axios news site reported that a senior official in U.S. President Donald Trump's administration stated that he does not expect an agreement to be signed with Iran today, Sunday, noting that "there are some details that still need to be resolved."

The official added that negotiations are still experiencing "give and take" regarding some details and formulations that are important to both the American and Iranian sides, pointing out that "the Iranian regime in its current form is not moving quickly," and that it "will take a few days to pass through all stages of approval."

The American official clarified, according to the site, that American estimates indicate that Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has approved the "broad outlines" of the agreement, but he noted that transforming that into a final agreement "is still an open question."

"Agreement Terms"

Axios also clarified, citing an American official, that the United States and Iran are on the verge of signing an agreement that includes extending the ceasefire for 60 days, during which the Strait of Hormuz will be reopened.

The agreement also stipulates that Iran will be able to sell oil freely and hold negotiations regarding curbing its nuclear program.

According to the Axios report, the Strait of Hormuz will be opened during the sixty-day period without imposing fees, and Iran will agree to remove the mines it has planted in the strait to allow ships to pass freely.

The report stated that the draft agreement also includes commitments from Iran never to seek to acquire nuclear weapons, negotiating a suspension of its uranium enrichment program, and eliminating its stockpile of highly enriched uranium.
