Israel Presents New Plan to Disarm Hezbollah
SadaNews: The Israeli ambassador to Washington, Yahel Leiter, announced that Tel Aviv is about to present a new plan to Lebanon aimed at the gradual disarmament of Hezbollah. He explained that Israel is ready to enter into comprehensive peace negotiations with Lebanon, provided that a clear path for disarming the party is implemented.
Leiter confirmed that the Israeli proposal is based on identifying areas where disarmament will take place, and then gradually moving to other areas as part of a wide-ranging political plan. He added that Israel is participating in another round of negotiations with a new initiative, emphasizing the need for the Lebanese government to strengthen the national army to be the sole authority responsible for security.
The ambassador pointed out that there are Hezbollah camps in southern Lebanon and that Israel has found around eight thousand rockets since the return of fighting. Despite the Lebanese government's announcement regarding the disarmament of the party in the south, the reality on the ground – according to Leiter – remains far from that.
According to the statements, Israel believes that the success of this plan will form the basis for conducting full peace negotiations with Lebanon as if Hezbollah does not exist, but this remains conditional on Beirut's commitment to the path of gradual disarmament.
