The Random Memory Crisis Could End the Chinese Leading 'Ultra' Phone Category

SadaNews - The ongoing memory shortage and rising prices are causing massive chaos across various sectors, as tech giants monopolize the entire supply at high prices, while AI data centers compete for the remaining supplies.

Amid this turmoil, new leaks suggest that some phone manufacturers may have to confront the situation by temporarily halting production of their high-end "Ultra" flagship phones until conditions improve.

According to the leaks, shared by two accounts on the X platform and the Chinese social media platform Weibo, several smartphone manufacturers are considering the option to suspend production of the highest-spec flagship phone category, as reported by PhoneArena, a site specializing in phone news, which was reviewed by "Al Arabiya Business".

Low and mid-range models and "Pro" variants will continue production, but "Ultra" models will disappear from the market until memory becomes less expensive and accessible to everyone.

Current leaks indicate that only a limited number of Chinese phone companies are considering this option. In contrast, well-known companies in Western markets like Apple, Samsung, and Google are unlikely to take similar action.

Apple is expected to launch its first foldable phone later this year, which was recently said to be named "iPhone Ultra" instead of the previously circulated name "iPhone Fold".

However, Chinese brands often push the boundaries of innovation in their flagship models regarding photography or raw performance, which the market could greatly miss if production of this category stops.

Leaks indicate that budget and mid-range phones, as well as higher-spec "Pro" models, are selling in sufficient numbers to still generate profits.

In contrast, "Ultra" phones from these brands come with extremely high specifications, but they do not achieve high sales due to their elevated prices. Like Samsung's Galaxy Z TriFold, the aim of some of these phones is to showcase the companies' technical prowess more than to be products aimed at achieving massive sales.

Given the current circumstances regarding the substantial rise in memory component prices, continuing to manufacture "Ultra" phones could lead to financial losses rather than profits.

The current memory crisis raises significant concerns, as it is expected that some smaller companies will declare bankruptcy due to it. Meanwhile, companies like Apple are monopolizing large quantities of memory units at exorbitant prices, leading to the exclusion of competitors from the market.
