Warnings of Lead Seeping Through Children's Clothing Due to Bright Colors
SadaNews - A U.S. study has warned that some cheap children's clothing with bright colors may contain high levels of lead, exposing children—especially infants and toddlers—to serious health risks.
Researchers presented their findings during a meeting of the American Chemical Society in Atlanta, explaining that the fabric used in manufacturing some of these cheap clothes contains high percentages of lead, and the danger is exacerbated because many infants and children naturally chew on the sleeves or collars of their clothes while wearing them.
Researcher Christina Avilo from Marian University in Indianapolis stated, "Children are not the only ones exposed to lead risks in these clothes; some adults also have a habit of chewing on clothes while wearing them, which may expose them to lead as well."
Research from the "Centers for Disease Control and Prevention" indicates that lead can cause health problems in the brain and nervous system, affect growth processes, and that even small amounts pose significant dangers to children.
Tests on Cheap Multi-Colored Shirts
As part of the study, researchers tested 11 shirts from four companies specializing in selling cheap clothing, which included various colors such as red, crimson, orange, yellow, gray, and blue. They found that all samples contained lead levels exceeding the allowable health limit of 100 parts per million of fabric components.
The results also showed that lead levels were significantly higher in clothes dyed in bright colors like red and yellow.
The researchers concluded, according to the study published on the "Health Day" website specializing in medical research, that the habit of chewing on clothes containing high lead levels may lead to increased lead levels in children's blood, which may require medical intervention and specialized healthcare.
