Kidnapping of American Journalist and Iraqi Interior Ministry Arrests One Suspect

SadaNews - The Iraqi Ministry of Interior confirmed this evening (Tuesday) the kidnapping of a foreign journalist in downtown Baghdad by unknown individuals, indicating that they managed to arrest one of the suspects involved in the kidnapping. A source in the Ministry of Interior revealed to Xinhua News Agency that the journalist is American.

The ministry stated in a report, "The Ministry of Interior announces that this evening a foreign journalist was kidnapped by unknown individuals, and immediately, the relevant security forces commenced their duties to pursue the perpetrators based on accurate intelligence information and intensive field efforts to track the kidnappers' movements."

It added, "The follow-up and pursuit operations resulted in surrounding a vehicle belonging to the kidnappers, which led to its overturning during their escape attempt. The security forces managed to arrest one of the suspects and seize one of the vehicles used in the crime."

The ministry emphasized that efforts continue to track down the remaining perpetrators, to free the kidnapped journalist, and to take appropriate legal actions against all participants in this criminal act, in accordance with the law.

The statement mentioned that investigations are still ongoing to fully uncover the circumstances of the incident, and further details will be announced later.

The Ministry of Interior reiterated its commitment to not allow any attempts to undermine security or target foreign guests, and its security agencies will remain vigilant and decisive in pursuing lawbreakers and bringing them to justice.

In a related context, a source in the Ministry of Interior revealed to Xinhua News Agency that the journalist is American, noting that she was kidnapped near the Palestine Hotel on Al-Saadoun Street in downtown Baghdad.

The American embassy had urged its citizens to leave Iraq immediately on Sunday evening after receiving information that armed Iraqi groups were targeting American citizens and American universities in Baghdad and the Kurdistan region in the north of the country.
