Merz: The German Army Could Participate in Mine Clearance from the Strait of Hormuz
SadaNews - German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that the German armed forces could participate in mine clearance from the Strait of Hormuz once the war in Iran is over.
He said at an event organized by the "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung" in Frankfurt on Friday evening, "We can do that. If we are asked to do so and it is under a truly collective security mandate – I mean from the United Nations, NATO, and the European Union – by a decision from the Bundestag (the parliament), then this is an option."
The Chancellor added, "We can achieve this militarily." The German army has several mine sweepers.
Merz also pointed out that the Strait of Hormuz is currently "clearly not mined at all." He went on to say that he does not know if Iran plans to do so.
The Chancellor added, "Therefore, we are discussing this matter theoretically to some extent."
