Politico: The Global Reputation of the United States is Worse than Its Citizens Imagine
SadaNews - A survey conducted by the American website Politico across five major countries, including the United States, revealed a significant gap between Americans' perception of their country and the views of citizens from many of its top allies towards America.
The survey, which included samples from the United States, Canada, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, concluded that the global reputation of the United States is much worse than Americans realize.
Conducted from February 6 to 9, the survey included 10,289 adults online, with at least 2,000 respondents from each of the United States, Canada, the UK, France, and Germany. The results from each country were weighted to ensure representativity across dimensions such as age, gender, and geographical distribution.
In the details of the survey's results, it was noted that the variance within America was related to the state of partisan division between Republicans and Democrats, where Americans who voted for President Donald Trump in 2024 rated the country very highly on the global stage.
Conversely, those who supported Kamala Harris - former Vice President Joe Biden's running mate - expressed negative evaluations that closely match the views of America's allies.
Politico commented on the survey results, stating that they depict an unbalanced picture, where Americans increasingly find themselves on an "isolated island" regarding their perception of their country.
The website noted that the disparity over America's global image is not limited to those included in its survey but has also been expressed by many leaders across Europe and Canada, who have voiced concerns about President Donald Trump's efforts to abandon longstanding alliances.
Defending Democracy
Regarding the promotion of democracy worldwide, the website pointed out that Washington has long viewed itself as the defender of democracy both domestically and internationally, but that reputation may be eroding amid growing concerns among America's allies about whether it still upholds democratic principles.
The website cited a recent political development to underscore that concern, regarding the American military's detention earlier this year of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on several grounds, including that the election Maduro won was controversial; however, some allies and international experts have questioned the legitimacy of American intervention in Venezuela.
Washington's Reliability
The survey addressed participants' opinions on the role of the United States in achieving or threatening stability in the world.
The website explained that the countries surveyed were among those most affected by President Trump's sweeping trade agenda, leading to tensions in economic and diplomatic relations.
Because of those high tariffs and Trump's sharp attacks on his country's allies, these nations have begun to question Washington's reliability, both as a partner and as a stabilizing force.
According to the survey, allies no longer view the United States merely as a stabilizing force; a substantial percentage of them - including a relative majority of 43% in Canada - see the country as generally a threat to global stability.
Clashes with Allies
The website cited what happened at the Munich Security Conference held last month, where several world leaders openly questioned the United States' position within the international system.
On the other hand, the prevailing opinion among the close allies surveyed was that America cannot be relied upon in times of crises. This was the view of a majority of 57% in Canada and 51% in Germany, as well as a relative majority in both France (47%) and the United Kingdom (42%).
Politico contextualized these concerns, stating that the Trump administration has clashed with its allies over defense spending, trade, and the scope of collective security agreements, which has raised doubts about America's commitments in Europe and called into question whether Washington can be trusted.
