Lebanese Prime Minister Warns of "Humanitarian Catastrophe" Amid Israeli Airstrikes
SadaNews - Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov stated on Friday that his country is withdrawing its diplomats from Iran for their safety, following a day after Baku announced that four Iranian drones crossed its borders and injured four people in the Nakhchivan enclave.
He mentioned during a press conference in Baku that Azerbaijan is evacuating staff from its embassy in Tehran and its consulate general in Tabriz, the largest city in northwestern Iran, which has a large population of Azerbaijanis.
He said: "Based on the orders of President Ilham Aliyev, instructions have been issued to evacuate our embassy in Tehran and our consulate general in Tabriz, and these instructions are already being implemented. We cannot endanger the lives of our people".
Azerbaijan's reaction on Thursday was marked by anger at what it described as an incursion of Iranian drones into the Nakhchivan enclave, and President Aliyev threatened to respond.
Iran denied launching drones. Relations between the two countries have long been strained, with Iran feeling angry about Azerbaijan's close ties with Israel.
Azerbaijan and Iran share a majority of Shia Muslims, but its government is secular.
The war between America and Israel on one side, and Iran on the other, has entered its seventh day. The Israeli army announced on Friday the start of a wave of "wide-ranging" strikes against Iranian infrastructure in Tehran.
