Republicans in America Reject Ceasefire on Iran
SadaNews - Members of the Republican Party in the U.S. Senate voted against a proposal that aimed to halt airstrikes and sought congressional approval before any military action, effectively leaving President Donald Trump's powers largely unchecked in directing the war, as the conflict continues to escalate within the Middle East and beyond.
The vote ended with a majority of 53 against 47 in favor of not moving forward with the resolution.
This comes at a time when the war between the United States and Iran has sharply escalated after a U.S. submarine sank an Iranian warship off the coast of Sri Lanka on Wednesday, resulting in the deaths of at least 80 people.
In another escalation, NATO destroyed an Iranian ballistic missile launched towards Turkey, marking Ankara's first direct involvement in the conflict.
Despite Turkey having the second largest army in the alliance, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth stated that this does not invoke NATO's collective defense clause.
This escalation coincided with the emergence of Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the late Iranian Supreme Leader, as a potential successor to his father, indicating that Tehran will not submit to the military pressures exerted by the United States and Israel, which have claimed hundreds of lives and destabilized global markets.
The war has led to a paralysis of maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday, affecting vital oil and gas flows from the region.
U.S. President Donald Trump has pledged to provide insurance and naval escorts for ships to prevent rising prices.
Estimates from Reuters indicate that around 200 ships are still anchored off the coast.
Commenting on the situation, U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright told Fox News that the U.S. Navy will escort oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz "as soon as possible", but noted that the current focus of the forces is on the conflict and disarming the Iranian regime, emphasizing that no requests for assistance from commercial ships have been received yet.
