London Police Release Former Minister Peter Mandelson on Bail in Epstein Case
SadaNews - The London police announced early on Tuesday morning that former minister and British ambassador Peter Mandelson has been released on bail after being detained in connection with allegations related to the Jeffrey Epstein case.
The police statement clarified that Mandelson, who is 72 years old, was released on bail pending further investigations into suspected misconduct during his time in public office, particularly while he served as a minister in Gordon Brown's government from 2008 to 2010.
Mandelson's arrest came days after the former Prince Andrew was detained on suspicion of his involvement in the same case.
Andrew, who previously held the titles of Prince and Duke of York, is suspected of leaking potentially confidential information to Epstein during his tenure as the UK special envoy for international trade from 2001 to 2011.
Andrew was released Thursday evening after being held for several hours "on bail pending investigation."
The London police had announced on February 3 that they were opening an investigation into Mandelson after documents from the Epstein case released by the U.S. Department of Justice at the end of January suggested that he may have leaked stock market information that could affect the markets, particularly when he was a minister in Gordon Brown's government from 2008 to 2010.
The police had previously searched two of his homes in London and Wiltshire.
Starmer appointed Mandelson as ambassador to Washington in December 2024, before dismissing him in September 2025 following revelations of his connections to Epstein, which sparked criticisms of his government, leading him to apologize to Epstein's victims, and the resignation of his chief of staff and media officer.
The first batch of documents related to Mandelson's appointment and dismissal is expected to be published in early March.
