Pakistan: 125 Killed in Separatist Attacks in Balochistan
SadaNews - Approximately 125 people were killed in Balochistan province, southwest Pakistan, following attacks carried out by separatist groups, which included armed and suicide operations.
The clashes between separatists and security forces resulted in the deaths of 18 civilians and 15 security personnel, in addition to 92 attackers, including three suicide bombers, according to the Pakistani military on Sunday.
The attacks occurred in multiple locations across the province, including the capital Quetta and the city of Gwadar, causing widespread damage and chaos in traffic, telecommunications, and train services.
In the Mastung area, the separatists managed to free 30 prisoners, attacked a police station, and seized weapons and ammunition, as well as kidnapping a local official in the city of Nushki.
"Balochistan Liberation Army," the largest separatist group in the region, claimed responsibility for the attacks, confirming its targeting of military and police facilities and closing highways to delay the army's response, with the participation of women in the operations.
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif affirmed his support for the armed forces in their "struggle to defend the country," accusing India of supporting the separatists. A senior military official stated that the attacks were "coordinated" but were thwarted thanks to an effective response from the security forces.
The region, rich in hydrocarbons and minerals, suffers from poverty and marginalization, fueling conflicts and armed separations.
Pakistan has faced a rebellion in Balochistan for decades, with attacks increasing since the Taliban's return to power in Afghanistan in 2021. It is noted that the year 2024 witnessed more than 1,600 deaths in attacks, half of whom were soldiers and police personnel.
