American Writer: "The Peace Council" Formed by Trump is Destined for Failure and Obscurity
SadaNews - American writer Max Boot predicts that the "Peace Council" sponsored by U.S. President Donald Trump, officially launched last Thursday at the World Economic Forum in Davos, will quickly fade into obscurity, and people will only remember it as evidence that Trump sought by all means to glorify himself.
Boot explained in an op-ed in The Washington Post that when President Trump launched that council, he appeared to be trying to refute the charge that he is a leader inciting war and acting in defiance of international law and global public opinion, as evidenced by his attempts to seize Greenland before abandoning the option of force.
According to Boot, regardless of the differences between the control over Greenland and the launch of the "Peace Council," the driving motivation for Trump is that he wants to "do what he wants, wherever he wants, without any constraints or controls, and wishes to make a lot of money from it."
The writer clarified that the United Nations Security Council was unaware, when it approved the establishment of the "Peace Council" in November 2025, that it was creating a competing body to the United Nations itself, as the aim at that time was to create a governance mechanism in post-war Gaza.
When that council was officially unveiled last week in Davos, Switzerland, during the World Economic Forum, it turned out to extend far beyond Gaza, actually encompassing almost the entire world.
Powers of the President
The founding charter of the council states that all powers are concentrated in the hands of President Trump, who has the authority to invite countries to join, use the veto against decisions, dissolve the council, adopt decisions or other directives, and even approve the official seal of the council.
Commenting on the wide-ranging powers held by Trump, Max Boot remarked that this model of governance seems closer to a "Trump Corporation" than to the collective leadership of the United Nations or NATO.
The author added that the comparison to the Trump Corporation is entirely appropriate, as the Peace Council, as envisioned by the president, aims to amass vast revenues; if a country wishes to membership for more than three years, it must pay a contribution of one billion dollars.
What is striking to the writer is that the destination of that money is unclear, as the charter states that "the Peace Council has the right to authorize the creation of accounts as necessary to carry out its mission", which means that Trump would have at his disposal a massive secret fund independent of Congress's financial authority.
Perhaps for this reason, the writer notes, many invitees to the Peace Council chose not to respond to the invitation, and the list of initial signatories was limited to about 20, with no indications so far that any of these countries would pay for membership beyond three years.
In contrast, some countries like France, Sweden, and Spain have rejected membership in the council, angering Trump, who excluded Canada due to his displeasure with Prime Minister Mark Carney's speech in Davos, in which he called medium powers to unite against the bullying of great powers.
The writer suggests that most countries are trying to avoid drawing attention, hoping that Trump's focus will shift and that people will forget the "Peace Council," as happened with the idea of annexing Greenland.
A Formal Council
The writer comments on the entire project, stating that it is merely a formal attempt lacking any substantial content, akin to what dictators do when they adopt democracy formally (elections, constitutions, parliaments) without applying it substantively.
Following that line of reasoning, the writer adds, the Peace Council adopts pluralism formally but not substantively, and ultimately is just an individual showcase; for this reason, only a few countries would accept to be under Trump's control.
In light of this, the writer concluded that this council is destined for failure and will quickly be forgotten, and if some remember it, it will only be as an affirmation that Trump sought to turn everything into a means to glorify himself.
