Spain: 39 Dead Due to Train Collision
SadaNews - The death toll from the collision of two high-speed trains last night in southern Spain has risen to at least 39 fatalities, according to a new toll confirmed by the Ministry of the Interior on Monday morning.
Transport Minister Oscar Puente stated that the violence of the impact was so severe that it "derailed the first two carriages of the Renfe train."
The minister warned that the toll is "not final," writing on the X platform that "the number of dead has risen to 39, and it is not final."
The previous toll had indicated that 24 people had died as a result of the disaster that occurred in the Andalusia region, about 200 kilometers north of the city of Malaga.
The accident also resulted in approximately 123 injuries, including 5 in very critical condition and 24 in serious condition, according to the same source.
The injured were transferred to hospitals in Cordoba and Andújar, as reported by emergency services in Andalusia late Sunday to Monday on X.
The Spanish army's emergency unit was deployed to the area to assist rescue teams, and a field hospital was established near the accident site.
The incident occurred at 19:45 when a train belonging to the Irio company, leaving Malaga towards the capital Madrid, derailed and collided with a Renfe train traveling in the opposite direction on an adjacent track towards the city of Huelva.
