In Numbers.. Real Madrid the "Nightmare" of Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup
SadaNews - Real Madrid has a historic advantage over its rival Barcelona in the history of their encounters in the Spanish Super Cup.
Real Madrid will clash with Barcelona this evening, Sunday, in the final match of the 2026 Super Cup at the Al-Inma Stadium in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, at 22:00 Mecca and Doha time.
Today’s match will be the 19th meeting between the two rivals in the history of the Super Cup according to data from the famous “Transfermarkt” website, and the fifth on Saudi soil, according to the Spanish newspaper “Mundo Deportivo”.
Real Madrid has previously won 10 matches against Barcelona in the Super Cup, compared to 6 victories for the Catalan team, while the two teams have only drawn twice.
The two teams first met in the Super Cup in the 1988-1989 season, when the tournament was held in a match between the league and Copa del Rey champions.
In that match, the royal team won the title with a score of 3-2 over the Blaugrana in the aggregate of the two legs.
Since that date, the two teams have faced each other several times, the most recent being last year’s final in which Barcelona crushed its rival Real Madrid 5-2 at the Al-Inma Stadium in Jeddah.
Here are the results of the Clasico matches between Real Madrid and Barcelona in the old format of the Spanish Super Cup:
Real Madrid 2-0 Barcelona (First leg final of the 1988-1989 season).
Barcelona 2-1 Real Madrid (Second leg final of the 1988-1989 season).
Barcelona 0-1 Real Madrid (First leg final of the 1990-1991 season).

Real Madrid 2-0 Barcelona (Second leg final of the 2017-2018 season).
Results of Clasico matches in the Spanish Super Cup in its new format (4 teams):
Barcelona 2-3 Real Madrid after extra time (Semi-final of the 2022 edition).
Barcelona 3-1 Real Madrid (Final of the 2023 edition).
Real Madrid 4-1 Barcelona (Final of the 2024 edition).

Historical Paradox
The newspaper “Mundo Deportivo” indicated that the team that will be crowned today will pave its way to claiming the La Liga title for the 2025-2026 season, citing what has happened in recent years.
It stated, "Barcelona and Real Madrid return to compete for the first title of the season in the Super Cup final, which marks a turning point for the rest of the season."
It added, "Looking at the Super Cup record in Saudi Arabia, the results of the previous four matches determined the direction of the season's development for the two teams later on."
It explained that winning the Super Cup by either Real Madrid or Barcelona in previous editions has been followed by the team being crowned with the Spanish league title at the end of the season.
This happened with Real Madrid in the 2022 and 2024 editions, and with Barcelona in 2023 and 2025.
