Trump: "My Morality is the Only Thing That Can Stop Me"
SadaNews - Former U.S. President Donald Trump said in an interview published late Thursday night that his "morality" is the only thing that restricts his authority to issue orders for military operations around the world.
Trump's remarks to The New York Times came days after he launched a swift attack to oust Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, threatening several other countries in addition to the self-governing region of Greenland.
When asked by the newspaper if there are any limits to his operations abroad, Trump replied, "Yes, there is one thing. My morality... it is the only thing that can stop me." He added, "I don't need international law. I'm not looking to harm people." He indicated that he has an obligation to international law, but said, "it depends on how you define international law."
The United States is not a member of the International Criminal Court, which prosecutes war criminals, and it has repeatedly rejected rulings from the International Court of Justice, the highest court of the United Nations. Donald Trump has faced legal troubles at home. Congress initiated impeachment proceedings against him twice during his first term, and he was convicted on criminal charges related to undisclosed payments to adult film actress Stormy Daniels, while facing federal charges for illegal attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 election before his return to power helped dismiss his case.
While presenting himself as a "president of peace" and seeking the Nobel Prize, he launched a series of military operations during his second presidential term. He ordered attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities in June, and last year, he also oversaw strikes in Iraq, Nigeria, Somalia, Syria, Yemen, and, most recently, Venezuela.
Since Maduro's arrest, the emboldened Trump has threatened several other countries, including Colombia, as well as Denmark's Greenland, a NATO member.
In response to a question about whether his priority is to maintain the military alliance or to acquire Greenland, Trump said, "That may be an option." The Republican billionaire, who made his fortune as a real estate developer, added that U.S. ownership of Greenland is "what I feel is psychologically necessary for success."
