Bulgaria: Clashes with Police After Protests Over the 2026 Budget
SadaNews - Tens of thousands protested against the government in Bulgaria yesterday, expanding the scope of an anti-corruption movement sweeping through the poorest country in the European Union, as the country prepares to adopt the euro.
In the largest demonstration in years, protesters gathered in a massive square in front of the parliament, carrying placards calling for government change and protesting the proposed 2026 budget, which they see as an attempt to hide rampant corruption.
Protesters clashed with police, who surrounded the offices of the ruling parties in Sofia, throwing stones, bottles, and firecrackers at the officers.
On November 28, following similar protests, the minority government led by Rosen Gilyazkov pledged to re-submit the 2026 spending plan to parliament, aiming to allow more time for consultations with opposition parties, labor unions, and employers.
A parliamentary committee had approved the budget plan in its first reading on November 18.
Opposition parties and other organizations claim they are protesting the government's plans to increase social security contributions and taxes on corporate profits to finance increased spending, in addition to state corruption.
Almost half of Bulgarians oppose adopting the euro, fearing it would affect the country's sovereignty, and that retailers would take advantage of the transition from the national currency (lev) to the euro to raise prices.
This month, European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde warned of potential inflation increases when Bulgaria joins the eurozone.
