In the First Official Visit.. Syrian Foreign Minister Heads to China

SadaNews - Syrian authorities announced that Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani will head to China today, Sunday, in the first official visit by a government official under President Ahmad al-Shara.

The media department of the Syrian Foreign Ministry stated yesterday, Saturday, that al-Shibani will travel to the People's Republic of China for official talks with several Chinese officials, according to the Syrian news agency (SANA).

In October of last year, al-Shibani announced in an interview with Syrian News Channel his intention to carry out his first official visit to China at the beginning of November in response to an invitation from Beijing.

At that time, al-Shibani stated, "We have rectified the relationship with China, which politically supported the fallen regime of Bashar al-Assad and used its veto in his favor," emphasizing that Syria needs China at this stage for reconstruction.

This visit comes as part of a shift in the relationship between the two countries, especially since Beijing was one of the supporting countries for the previous regime, and announced the elevation of bilateral relations to a strategic partnership during the visit of the ousted president Bashar al-Assad to China in September 2023.

Since the overthrow of Assad's regime in December 2024, Syria, under President al-Shara, has been striving to enhance its regional presence and open up on the international stage, establishing relations based on mutual respect and shared interests with various countries around the world.
