Sharaa: Syria Enters a New Era Following the Fall of Assad's Regime
SadaNews - Syrian President Ahmad Sharaa stated that his country has entered a new era following the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime, affirming that it will work on formulating a different strategy in its relations with the United States after decades of isolation.
Sharaa explained, in an interview with American network "Fox News" that aired early Tuesday, that Syria has been isolated from the world for the past sixty years, pointing out that the coming phase will witness a new political and diplomatic openness.
Regarding negotiations with Israel, the Syrian president confirmed that Damascus will not enter into direct talks at present, saying: "The Syrian situation is different from the countries that signed the Abraham Accords; we have borders with Israel, which occupies the Golan Heights, so there is no room for direct negotiations now, and perhaps President Trump’s administration will play a role in preparing the conditions for that in the future."
Sharaa added that he is in contact with the mother of missing American journalist Austin Tice, vowing to make every effort to determine his fate and the fate of other missing individuals in Syria.
He noted that his previous relationship with al-Qaeda is in the past, emphasizing that he did not discuss this issue during his recent meeting with President Donald Trump.
On Monday, Sharaa held unprecedented talks at the White House, the first of its kind for a Syrian president since the establishment of the Syrian state in the 1940s.
Trump expressed his full support for Sharaa following the meeting, saying he wants to see "Syria succeed after a war that has lasted more than a decade," adding that Washington is working with Israel to improve relations with Damascus, praising Sharaa's ability to "achieve stability" despite his past, which he described as "troubled."
