UK: 10 Injured in Mass Stabbing Incident at Train Station
SadaNews - British police announced early Sunday the arrest of two individuals in connection with a mass stabbing incident aboard a train traveling from Doncaster to King's Cross station in London, resulting in injuries to ten people, nine of whom are in "critical and life-threatening" condition.
Emergency teams, including police and ambulance services, rushed to Huntingdon station in Cambridgeshire, eastern England, after receiving reports of the attack, where the train was stopped and evacuated.
British Transport Police stated via the "X" platform that anti-terror units are participating in the investigation, noting that the injured have been transported to local hospitals for treatment.
According to eyewitnesses, there was significant panic among passengers on the train, as some reported seeing a man with a large knife and "blood everywhere," while others rushed to hide or jumped over seats in an attempt to escape.
One witness told The Times that some passengers stepped on others amidst the chaos, adding that the police tasered the attacker when apprehending him on the station platform.
For his part, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed his "deep concern" regarding the incident, stating in a post on "X":
"The horrifying incident on the train near Huntingdon raises significant alarm. My thoughts are with all those affected, and I extend my thanks to the emergency services for their swift response."
Interior Minister Shabana Mahmood urged residents in the area to follow police instructions, confirming the arrest of two suspects in the case.
Police clarified that the first report came in around 7:40 PM local time, after the train had left Peterborough station.
Criminal teams continued to search the train late into the night, treating it as a "crime scene," while the operating railway company temporarily closed its lines due to the incident, warning of "major disruptions" in train services.
Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Mayor Paul Bristow stated he had received "reports of horrific scenes," affirming his solidarity with all the injured and their families.
Authorities have not yet revealed the identities of the arrested individuals or the motives behind the attack, as investigations continue to determine whether the incident has terrorist or personal motivations.
It is worth noting that knife crime has seen a steady increase in the UK and Wales since 2011, despite strict laws on carrying knives. The UK government considers this phenomenon a "national crisis," having recently announced the seizure of approximately 60,000 sharp weapons over one year as part of efforts to reduce knife-related violence.
