Casualties in Russian Airstrike on Kyiv
SadaNews - Three people were killed and 29 others injured in the attack carried out by Russian forces using drones on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, overnight, including 6 children.
The military administration of Kyiv confirmed early Sunday morning that the attack resulted in serious injuries, as the intensity of air attacks on the city escalates.
Ukrainian authorities stated via the Telegram platform that Ukrainian air defenses were immediately deployed to repel the attack. The air defenses managed to intercept several Russian drones, but the debris from those downed drones caused damage to residential buildings in various areas of Kyiv.
Later, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko stated that the attacks caused significant damage to two high-rise residential buildings, but he did not confirm whether the drones directly targeted the buildings or if the damage was caused by falling debris from the intercepting drones.
He added that the situation is still under evaluation regarding the extent of the damages.
Child Injuries
The military administration of Kyiv clarified in its Telegram statement that 6 of the injured were children, confirming that all the injured are receiving necessary medical care, with some transferred to hospitals for treatment.
The military administration added that emergency teams are working at full capacity to provide medical assistance to the injured.
This attack comes at a sensitive time, as Ukraine continues to defend itself against the Russian invasion that began over 3 and a half years ago. Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities have repeatedly been subjected to drone and missile attacks, resulting in hundreds of civilian casualties.
On another front, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced during his visit to the Russian armed forces headquarters on Sunday that his country has "a great deal of work to eliminate armed Ukrainian groups", confirming that the military operation "will continue until all its set objectives are achieved".
Moscow also confirmed on Sunday that Russian air defense systems managed to destroy a drone heading towards the Russian capital, Moscow.
Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin stated via the Telegram app that the attack was thwarted without any reported damage.
U.S. Sanctions
In another development, U.S. President Donald Trump stated in remarks made yesterday, Saturday, that he would not engage in any talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin unless Putin shows seriousness in reaching an agreement to end the war in Ukraine.
Trump clarified while on board Air Force One heading to Asia: "I will not waste my time" in talks with Putin unless there are assurances that the agreement will lead to an end of the conflict.
Additionally, the United States imposed new sanctions last Wednesday on the two largest Russian oil companies, in a move aimed at increasing pressure on the Russian economy amid the ongoing war.
Trump had expressed his dissatisfaction with the outcomes of his previous talks with Putin, indicating that those discussions did not yield any tangible results regarding ending the conflict in Ukraine.
