After Decades of Conflict.. Cambodia and Thailand Sign Peace Agreement Under U.S. and Malaysian Sponsorship

SadaNews - In a historic step that ended a conflict lasting more than three decades, Cambodia and Thailand signed a comprehensive peace agreement under the sponsorship of the United States and Malaysia during the ASEAN summit held in the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur.

The signing ceremony witnessed extensive international attendance, including U.S. President Donald Trump, who described the event as "an important moment for all the peoples of Asia," asserting that "it took 32 years to stop the fighting between Thailand and Cambodia, and this peace agreement will save the lives of millions."

Trump added in his speech: "A year and a half ago we were a dead country, but now we are the best country in the world," indicating that this achievement reflects a significant shift in U.S. foreign policy towards Asia and emphasizes the importance of dialogue and diplomacy in ending regional conflicts.

For his part, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim stressed that the world is undergoing a critical transitional phase, stating that "the old system has ended, and the new system is yet to take shape," calling for enhanced mutual understanding as a way to overcome divisions.

The agreement comes after months of escalating border tensions between the two countries, which resulted in dozens of deaths and the displacement of hundreds of thousands, making this agreement a pivotal step towards regional stability in Southeast Asia.
