4 killed and others injured in a shooting in the Mississippi Delta region
SadaNews – A member of the Mississippi State Senate announced that 4 people were killed and others injured in a shooting in a town in the Mississippi Delta region after a high school football game.
Derrick Simmons, who represents the residents of that area in the Senate, reported that the shooting occurred in the center of the small town of Leland, where people had gathered after the game.
He added to the Associated Press that four others among about 20 people injured in the incident were taken to a hospital in Greenville and were then airlifted to a larger hospital in the state capital, Jackson, where they are currently in critical condition.
He confirmed that he is confident in the accuracy of the information he provided, as he obtained it from the Washington County Sheriff's Office, which is investigating the incident, as well as from other law enforcement agencies.
Simmons described the town, which has a population of less than 4,000, saying: "People were gathered in downtown Leland and enjoying their time."
He noted that he was informed that the place turned into "chaos" after the sound of gunfire, as "police and sheriff's department security forces and ambulances came from everywhere."
He described the incident as "senseless gun violence," adding: "What we are experiencing now is a massive proliferation of weapons circulating in the community."
No arrests of suspects have been announced so far, and Simmons said late this evening that he had not heard any information about potential suspects.
He added: "They are working on the ground, and I have all the confidence in the world that they will get to the truth."
He concluded by saying: "As a state senator for this area, we urge anyone who has any information regarding the horrific shooting that occurred last night to come forward and share what they know."
