Peruvian Parliament Ousts Country's President Dina Boluarte
SadaNews - The Peruvian Parliament ousted the country's President Dina Boluarte today (Friday), who refused to appear before Congress during a hearing.
The President of Parliament, José Cheers, stated at the end of a very brief session: "The ouster of the president is approved."
Parliament's President will assume power on an interim basis until general elections are held in April 2026.
A broad majority of parliamentarians voted for Boluarte's impeachment, with 118 members out of 122 supporting the measure, as reported by the "Agence France-Presse."
The main political forces in the single-chamber parliament submitted five memos for the president's impeachment on Thursday.
The memos stated that she suffers from a "persistent moral incapacity" to perform her duties, as noted in the documents read at the beginning of the parliamentary session.
Several people celebrated the decision outside the parliament, waving Peruvian flags and holding anti-president signs against the 63-year-old.
Boluarte had previously faced several impeachment attempts without success until now.
This time, the impeachment measure was approved because the right and far-right parties that had supported her withdrew their support.
Boluarte has faced extensive criticism for her inability to curb crime, while large demonstrations have been recorded across the country since she took office in December 2022.
