A Few Months Before the Election.. Eric Adams Withdraws from the Race for New York City Mayor

SadaNews - New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced on Sunday that he has withdrawn his nomination for a second term in this position, just a few months before the closely watched election by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Adams, who faced corruption allegations dropped earlier this year, said in a video posted on "X": "Despite all we have achieved, I cannot continue my campaign" for a second term.

He added, "The ongoing media speculation about my future and the decision of the campaign finance board to seize millions of dollars undermined my ability to raise the funds needed for any serious campaign."

Adams, who became the mayor of the largest city in the United States in 2022 on the Democratic party ticket, has become a divisive figure due to his legal troubles and collaboration with Trump.

In April, he stated that he would run as an independent candidate, which spared him from the heated primary elections within the Democratic party won by Zahran Mamdani.

In his statement, Adams implicitly criticized Mamdani, asserting that "big change is welcome and necessary, but we should be cautious of those who think the answer lies in dismantling the system we have built together over generations. This is not change, this is chaos."

Mamdani had promised to tackle the cost of living issue through controlled rents, free public transport, and daycares.

Rumors had circulated for weeks about Adams potentially withdrawing from the race to make way for Andrew Cuomo, the former governor of New York.

Reports indicated that the Trump administration is considering appointing Adams to some position if he withdraws from the election to improve Cuomo's chances of competing with Mamdani.

Adams, a former police officer from a humble background, was initially very popular, but his star began to fade due to corruption allegations, the high cost of living, and other challenges. He is the second Black American to serve as mayor of New York City.
