Without Mentioning Israel... The Security Council Condemns the Attack on Qatar
SadaNews - The United Nations Security Council condemned the recent attack on the Qatari capital, Doha, on Thursday - Friday, but did not mention Israel in the statement agreed upon by all 15 member states, including the United States, an ally of Israel.
The statement, drafted by Britain and France, emphasized that "the members of the council stressed the importance of de-escalation, expressed their solidarity with Qatar, and reaffirmed their support for Qatar's sovereignty and territorial integrity."
The council added: "Members confirmed the necessity for the release of hostages, including those killed by (the Palestinian Hamas movement), and for ending the war and suffering in Gaza to be our top priority."
Since the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, and the subsequent Israeli war on the Gaza Strip, the Security Council has been largely unable to take any action due to the repeated use of the veto, especially by the United States.
However, U.S. President Donald Trump issued a rare criticism of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu following airstrikes targeting Hamas leaders in Qatar on Tuesday, expressing his discomfort with the strike.
Israel attempted to target the political leaders of Hamas in an airstrike in Doha, which U.S. officials described as a unilateral escalation that does not serve American or Israeli interests.
Hamas announced the martyrdom of five of its members in the attack, including the son of Khalil Hayya, the head of Hamas's political bureau in Gaza. The attack threatens to disrupt U.S.-backed efforts to reach a ceasefire and end the nearly two-year-old war.
