New French Prime Minister Takes Office Amid Protests
SadaNews - On Wednesday, the new French Prime Minister, Sebastian Lecornu, pledged to implement profound changes as he took office succeeding Francois Bayrou, who resigned following a parliamentary vote of no confidence against him. Meanwhile, French authorities detained dozens of individuals during demonstrations that erupted in various cities in protest of President Macron's economic policies.
In his speech during the ceremony, Lecornu vowed to find "more innovative" ways to collaborate with opposition parties as he forms his government in an effort to end the political crisis in France, affirming that "no path is impossible."
Lecornu stated that he would work to discover innovative ways to collaborate with opponents to pass a budget aimed at reducing debt, while also promising to pursue new political paths after taking office on a day marked by widespread protests against the government.
French President Emmanuel Macron appointed Lecornu on Tuesday, making him the fifth prime minister in two years, bringing in a loyal figure unlikely to depart from his pro-business economic agenda.
On Monday, the French parliament voted in favor of dismissing Bayrou's government over its plans to rein in the soaring public debt, just nine months after taking office, becoming the first government since 1958 to fail to gain confidence in a vote it requested itself.
Lecornu, who previously held the position of Minister of Defense, indicated that the government will need to be "more innovative and sometimes pay more attention to the technical aspects while also being more serious" in its dealings with the opposition.
Opposition Reactions
Reactions to Lecornu's appointment on Tuesday highlighted the challenges he faces. The far-left indicated it would seek to oust him through an immediate vote of confidence, while the far-right National Rally expressed its initial willingness to work with him on the budget, provided its demands are met.
French authorities arrested around 200 individuals during protests that began on Wednesday in various cities, protesting President Macron's economic and social policies.
Several French cities are witnessing demonstrations under the slogan "Let's Shut Everything Down," in protest of Macron's economic and social policies.
In this context, hundreds of protesters gathered around the Gare du Nord train station in Paris, amid heightened security measures, with police using tear gas to prevent demonstrators from entering the station.
Protests erupted in Marseille, France's second-largest city, with thousands participating while raising slogans demanding Macron's resignation.
