Israel to Approve Recruitment of Tens of Thousands of Soldiers for Gaza War Today
SadaNews - The Hebrew Channel 13 reported that the Israeli government will approve today, Sunday, the recruitment of tens of thousands of reserve soldiers, after previously endorsing a plan to occupy Gaza, while mediators race against time in search of a new agreement.
The Israeli channel mentioned that the plan for expanding the operation includes the use of heavy fire and the execution of operations to take bites out of neighborhoods in Gaza City.
It added that senior officers in the Israeli occupation army voiced sharp criticisms of the anticipated military operation in Gaza, while Channel 12 reported that senior military officers stated that the war is stuck and has become like a vehicle sinking in the sand.
In turn, Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper said that all heads of Israeli security agencies rejected the plan to occupy the Gaza Strip during the Security Cabinet meeting yesterday, Friday, while the Wall Street Journal confirmed that the plan faces several challenges.
The newspaper noted that the Security Cabinet meeting lasted for 10 hours and included a heated discussion in which the security agency leaders expressed their opposition to occupying Gaza to varying degrees, affirming that there are "more appropriate options" to achieve the same objectives.
It emphasized that the meeting was a stage for disagreements between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir, with some ministers also confronting Zamir regarding his stance.
Israeli reports indicated that Zamir described the plan to occupy Gaza as a "strategic trap", asserting that it would weaken the army for years and endanger the lives of prisoners.
