Arrest of American Soldier Who Shot 5 of His Comrades in Georgia

SadaNews - Five American military personnel were injured after a soldier opened fire on his comrades at Fort Stewart Army Base in Georgia on Wednesday, before he was arrested, according to a senior military official.

Fort Stewart was locked down as rescue teams rushed to the scene while law enforcement dealt with the shooter, according to "AFP".

Brigadier General John Lubas stated at a press conference, "The soldiers at the location of the shooting responded to the soldier immediately and without hesitation, and they were able to subdue him, which allowed law enforcement to arrest him afterward."

Lubas also noted that the toll from the shooting was five injured, "all of whom are in stable condition and are expected to recover."

"Personal Handgun"

He explained that the suspect is Sergeant Cornelius Radford, pointing out that his motives remain unclear.

No military weapon was used in the shooting, which is believed to have been carried out with a "personal handgun," according to Lubas.

U.S. President Donald Trump described the shooting as a "brutal" act, stating in a statement to reporters that the Army's Criminal Investigation Division will ensure the imposition of "the maximum allowed by law" penalties on the perpetrator.

For his part, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth described the shooting as a "cowardly" act and pledged in a post on X platform to expedite bringing "the perpetrator and anyone found to be involved" before the court.

Governor of Georgia Condoles Victims' Families

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp wrote on the X platform: "We are deeply saddened by this tragedy that occurred today at the base."

He added: "We hold in our hearts the victims of this incident and their families, and all who answer the call of service, and we ask all Georgia residents to do the same."

It is noteworthy that Fort Stewart Base is located about 225 miles (362 kilometers) southeast of Atlanta and 40 miles (64 kilometers) southwest of Savannah.
