With $10 Billion... The U.S. and NATO Develop a New Funding Mechanism to Provide Weapons to Ukraine
SadaNews - Three informed sources reported that the United States and NATO are working on a new approach to supplying Ukraine with weapons using funds from member countries, to cover the cost of purchasing or transferring American weapons, according to "Reuters."
This collaboration regarding Ukraine comes at a time when U.S. President Donald Trump expressed his frustration with Moscow's ongoing attacks on its neighbor.
Trump initially took a more conciliatory tone towards Russia during his attempts to end the war that has been ongoing for more than three years in Ukraine, but he later threatened to begin imposing tariffs and take other measures if Moscow made no progress towards ending the conflict by August 8.
Last month, Trump stated that the United States would provide Ukraine with weapons that European allies would pay for, but he did not indicate how this would be carried out.
The sources indicated that NATO countries, Ukraine, and the United States are working on establishing a new mechanism, focused on supplying Kyiv with American weapons listed on Ukraine's priority needs.
Ukraine will prioritize the weapons it needs within batches valued at approximately $500 million, with NATO countries negotiating among themselves under the coordination of Secretary-General Mark Rutte to determine who will donate or fund the weapons on the list.
An unnamed European official said that NATO countries hope, through this mechanism, to provide Ukraine with weapons worth $10 billion.
The timeline within which NATO countries aim to supply the weapons remains unclear.
The European official added: "This is the starting line, and it's an ambitious goal that we are working to achieve. We are currently on this path, and we support this ambition. We need this level of support."
For his part, a senior military official in NATO, who also spoke on condition of anonymity, clarified that the initiative is a "voluntary effort coordinated by NATO, encouraging all allies to participate."
The official pointed out that the new plan includes a current account for the alliance, which is approved by the alliance's supreme military commander, where allies can deposit funds to purchase weapons for Ukraine.
NATO refrained from commenting. The White House, the U.S. Department of Defense (Pentagon), and the Ukrainian embassy in Washington did not respond to requests for comments.
Russian forces continue to gradually advance in Ukraine, currently controlling a fifth of the country’s territory.
