Trump: Canada's Support for a Palestinian State Hinders Reaching a Trade Agreement with It
SadaNews: Reuters reported that U.S. President Donald Trump stated, "Canada's announcement of its support for the establishment of a Palestinian state makes it difficult for us to reach a trade agreement with it."
This came after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Wednesday evening the country’s intention to recognize the state of Palestine during the UN General Assembly session next September.
During a press conference held by the Prime Minister, he confirmed that Canada has decided to recognize the state of Palestine in September and will continue working with international partners, including Britain and France, until a two-state solution is implemented.
Carney stated that the possibility of achieving a two-state solution seems to be evaporating before us due to the expansion of settlements and the unilateral actions taken by Israel in the West Bank and what is happening in the Gaza Strip, all of which diminish the possibility of establishing a Palestinian state, which led us to make this decision, and we are trying to make it an effective solution once again.
He emphasized Canada’s support for the priorities announced by President Mahmoud Abbas, which include a ceasefire, the introduction of medical and humanitarian aid, Israel's withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, and the commitment to hold general elections.
He also addressed Canada’s efforts in providing assistance to the Gaza Strip in cooperation with Jordan.
