During his call with the president: The Canadian Prime Minister announces that his country will recognize the State of Palestine next September
SadaNews - The President of the State of Palestine, Mahmoud Abbas, received a phone call on Wednesday evening from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
During the call, the Canadian Prime Minister informed President Abbas that his country would recognize the State of Palestine in September, coinciding with the convening of the United Nations General Assembly.
Carney confirmed that Canada will continue to work with France, Britain, and international community partners to achieve peace in accordance with international law to implement the two-state solution.
He also affirmed that in light of the difficult humanitarian situation, Canada is currently sending urgent humanitarian aid by air and land to the Gaza Strip in cooperation with Jordan.
For his part, the president appreciated Canada's historic position on recognizing the State of Palestine, which will enhance peace, stability, and security in the region and contribute to strengthening the bonds of friendship and cooperation between the two countries and joint efforts toward achieving peace and stability.
The president emphasized that this courageous stance comes at a historically significant moment to save the internationally supported two-state solution, calling on countries that have not recognized the State of Palestine to do so, in order to instill hope for genuine international will striving to end the occupation and achieve peace based on the decisions of international legitimacy and the Arab Peace Initiative, and to embody an independent State of Palestine along the borders of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital, to live in security and peace with its neighbors, and to move toward reconstruction.
Abbas also reiterated the priority of the State of Palestine in achieving a ceasefire, allowing humanitarian aid, stopping starvation, lifting the siege, releasing prisoners and hostages, preventing displacement, enabling the State of Palestine to fulfill its responsibilities fully in the Gaza Strip, and the complete withdrawal of Israel.
President Abbas stated that we reaffirm all the commitments we sent to the presidency of the international peace conference, including the commitment to go to general elections, while emphasizing that the Palestinian forces participating in these elections must recognize the political program of the Palestine Liberation Organization and its international obligations, and adhere to the principles of one state, one law, and one legitimate weapon, urging the need for the release of Palestinian tax funds and the cessation of settler terrorism and attacks on Islamic and Christian places of worship.
It was agreed at the end of the call to continue coordination and joint work for peace and to enhance bilateral relations between the State of Palestine and Canada on various levels.
