America approves sale of air defense systems to Egypt
SadaNews - The United States approved on Thursday evening the sale of air defense systems to its ally Egypt in a deal valued at nearly five billion dollars.
The deal involves "NASAMS" systems, which are surface-to-air missile systems produced by "RTX" (formerly known as Raytheon), used particularly by Ukrainians for months to counter Russian air attacks.
The U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency stated that this deal "will support U.S. foreign policy and national security objectives by enhancing the security of a key non-NATO ally that represents a force for political stability and economic progress in the Middle East."
Egypt, alongside Israel, is one of the largest beneficiaries of U.S. military aid.
When Republican President Donald Trump returned to the White House in January, his administration froze nearly all foreign aid, except for that provided to Egypt and Israel.
